Appointments to Boards and Commissions Institute

Appointments to Boards and Commissions InstituteEstablished in 2011, the Junior League of Los Angeles'  Appointments to Boards and Commissions Institute (ABCI) is a training program that helps prepare Junior League members to pursue appointments to California’s many public boards and commissions at the local, county, and state governmental levels. The goal of ABCI is to inform, educate and encourage Junior League members to pursue such appointments.

additional training opportunities:

  1. A salon discussion to be held in Spring 2013 in conjunction with JLLA’s Public Policy Institute.

  3. Mentoring from JLLA Sustainers and community members who have successfully served in appointed positions.

Inspiration from JLLA Members who have Served in Appointment Positions

Here are some thoughts from JLLA members who are serving or have served on a public board or commission:

Susan Steinhauser - California Arts Council, President of the Los Angeles Law Library Board of Trustees, Past President of the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Board,Past Legislative Chair of the Library of California, and Co-Founder of the Los Angeles Women’s Appointment Collaboration

“With other women’s organizations, we started the Los Angeles Women’s Appointment Collaboration (the predecessor to ABCI) and transformed women’s political participation on public boards. Women were no longer relegated to serving on traditional health and social services boards, but took their rightful place on the so-called power boards, those that raised and dealt with money, like the pension boards, the redevelopment boards the transportation boards (airport and harbor), and the utility boards.”

Connie Koehler - Past Chair of the Los Angeles County Aviation Commission

“I was the first woman general-aviation pilot and aircraft owner to be appointed to the Aviation Commission in its history (about 70 years when I joined it in 1992). The challenge of being the ‘first’ was also exciting, and a huge honor. As a result, I was also the first woman pilot to chair the commission in 1998.”

Lee Ann King - Past President of the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations

“Because of my experience providing inter-cultural and inter-group opportunities in Palos Verdes and in the South Bay, I bring practical program experience to the Commission, but my extensive JLLA training in managing meetings, facilitation and strategic planning has no doubt been my most valuable contribution to the Human Relations Commission. Junior League members are invaluable assets, not only with informed participation, but importantly with skills to improve the functioning of government boards and commissions.”
