Read Across California

Read Across California is an initiative established by the State Legislature declaring March of every year to be  “Read Across California Month.”  Sponsored by the Junior League of Los Angeles, this initiative is known as Assembly Concurrent Resolution 62 and was chaptered in September 2011.  This resolution requests that public and private stakeholders work together to:

  1. Raise the awareness of the importance of reading to young children.
  2. Raise the awareness of the importance of independent reading.
  3. Encourage everyone to read for 30 minutes for 30 days during the month of March, in conjunction with the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” campaign commencing on March 2 in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The Junior League of Los Angeles is committed to increasing literacy rates in Los Angeles, by focusing on enriching and encouraging family and caregiver involvement.  As part of its Issue Based Community Impact initiative, JLLA will expand its current and previous literacy projects, training and advocacy efforts with a new focus on supporting the parent/ primary caregiver thereby strengthening the entire family unit.  By helping the parent/caregiver population develop the tools necessary to enhance their children’s language and literacy skills, JLLA will have a lasting impact on Los Angeles’ families.

Help us spread the love of reading to a child in need. Each book donation will go directly to a child at one of our reading events.
